Five Decades: Poems

From 1925 to 1970
Pablo Neruda
lovingly and delicately
translated- presented
bilingually and
horizontally
becoming a flash
of love and
smashed
phosphor
nigh on thirty-two
years ago.

“Denny,
The best years (for us)
are still ahead!
Love
(always)
Lori
Happy 26th.”

I stumble into
a tangled
subterranean world
of wonder. Dark below
the earth feeling naked
as my hands turn
slowly
the pages.

I wonder
if Denny
and Lori
are still glowing
luminous
engines of survival.

I wonder
if Lori is
sitting in a
dark room alone
oblivious to
all numbers.

I wonder
if Denny
reduced to
seedlings
and tiny
smiles,
is out crying
in the rows
of corn.

I wonder
about harbors
full of ships
and where
the depths
of the oceans
lead.
